Winter Storm Alert: Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes

With winter storm warnings in effect across the region, local officials are reminding residents to take precautions to protect their homes from freezing temperatures — especially when it comes to water pipes.

To help prevent your plumbing from freezing during extreme cold, experts recommend the following steps:

  • Drip faucets along exterior walls when temperatures drop below freezing to keep water moving.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor spigots and cover exterior faucets with insulated caps or wrapped towels.
  • Know where your main water shutoff valve is in case a pipe bursts and you need to stop the flow quickly.
  • Store extra water by filling jugs, buckets, or even a bathtub for flushing toilets and washing if your water service is interrupted.

Taking a few minutes to prepare before the cold sets in can prevent costly damage and ensure your household stays safe and functional throughout the storm.
